David R Head Jr was born in Aurora, Colorado in 1971, and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and Salt Lake City, Utah. He lives and works in New York City. David received his BA in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994, and his AAS in Visual Communications from the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago in 2005. He began his career in Austin, as a founding member of the influential garage punk band, the Motards, designing posters and record covers in the burgeoning DIY music scene there throughout the 1990’s before continuing his art and design practice in Chicago.
His work has been recognized by the AIGA, HOW magazine and Communication Arts, was featured in Gestalten’s, Impressive: Printmaking, Letterpress & Graphic Design (2010), in Basheer Graphic Group’s, Creative Calendar Collection (2011), and will appear in the forthcoming, The Empty Bottle Chicago: 21+ Years Music / Friendly / Dancing, from Curbside Splendor Publishing. David’s work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, Chicago, Charleston, SC and Austin, TX, and is represented in the permanent collection of the Chicago Historical Society. In 2014, his 2-person show, Bad Vibes, was exhibited at Folioleaf gallery in Brooklyn as part of the final DUMBO Arts Festival in collaboration with Finnish/American graffiti artist, Rubin415.
